Edwin C. Land, “EC”, 69, of Petersburg, died on High Street in Petersburg on Sept. 2, 2016. EC was raised in Surry, VA, and spent his first 16 years there. He lived with his aunt, Mary Gill, in Petersburg and completed his last two years of high school there. He attended Randolph-Macon College, Hope College and graduated from VCU. He made many friends along the way and kept up with them throughout his life. Even though he never lived in Surry again, he enjoyed his trips there to visit with family and friends, and to reminisce. He loved living in Petersburg and enjoyed activities there, especially those of art and history. EC had a great sense of humor and liked to share his humorous thoughts. He had a lifelong love for the Detroit Tigers and baseball in general. As a child, he hoped that a random baseball scout would pass by and recognize his ability. He also followed UVA and RMC football. He had a varied work career and spent time in the hotel business, as a shop owner, and as an ESL instructor, which was a real labor of love for him. EC was the son of William Edwin Land and Mary Wilson Bohannan. He is survived by his sister, Mary W. Bell, and her husband, Ken; his nephew, Les Wright, and several cousins, including Susan Bruce, Carter Hardenbergh, Van Hardenbergh and Van's, mother, Frances Smith; and by his devoted friends, Susan Griswold and Louise Thornton. He is also survived by loyal friends whom he loved so much. His memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, with a reception following, at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 501 Old Town Drive, Colonial Heights. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Canon James D. Smith. If you wish to make a donation, please consider the Petersburg Fire Department, 125 N. Union Street, Petersburg, VA., 23803.
