Charles Denver "Sonny" Summers, Sr., 84, of Hopewell, Virginia, passed away March 3, 2023. He was born in Imboden, Virginia, on November 4, 1938, the son of the late Charles and Anna Warden Summers.
Sonny spent 25 years in the military; two in the Marines, and 23 in the Army. He was one of 15 children, and attended Broadway Baptist Church in Hopewell.
He was preceded in death by his five brothers, Jimmie Summers, Earl Summers, Glen Summers, Gary Summers, and Bill Summers; as well as three sisters, Wanda Cook, Louise Morelock, and Brenda Johnson.
Sonny is survived by his children, Charles "Chuck" Summers, Jr. (Karol Ann), of Parma, Ohio, and Teresa Polk (Rudy), of Appalachia, Virginia; grandchildren, Andrea Kohlman (Mike), Brandie Cassel (Rick), Mark Burkholder (Jamie), John Adam McHue, Daniel James McHue, and Gabriel Thomas McHue; and great-grandchildren, Mataya Dawn, Tripp, Michaella, Issac, Adam, Viola, Eian, Elijah, Jalynn, and Olivia.
Sonny is also survived by many of his siblings, including his sisters, Nell Long, of Bristol, Virginia, Velva Jo Stephens (Raz), of Hopewell, Virginia, Judy Butler, of Appalachia, Virginia, Darlene Varner, of Appalachia, Virginia, and Karen Johnson (Hershel), of Duffield, Virginia. He is also survived by one brother, Robert Summers, of Piney Flats, Tennessee; a brother-in-law, Roger Johnson, of Pikeville, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Miranda Lunsford, of Appalachia, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home - Hopewell, 820 W. Broadway Avenue, on Monday, March 13, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, where a funeral service will be held in the chapel at 11 AM. A committal service will take place later that afternoon, at 2:00 PM, at Virginia Veteran's Cemetery, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia Court House.
Sonny will be missed so much by his friends and family.
