Dr. Clarice Aileen (Trellis) Lewis, age 92, passed peacefully on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, in her daughters home in Chesterfield, VA. She went to be with the Lord knowing that she was loved. Her daughter, Annette and granddaughter, Clarissa, I believe, opened the gates for her to enter.
Clarice was born on May 9, 1930, in New Amsterdam, British Guyana, to Jimmy Trellis and Marion Sydney. Upon completing her education in Guyana, God opened the door for her to teach here in the United States.
Clarice married Jimmy Lewis and had four children (one deceased). All the while she continued her studies. Graduating with a BS in Education, MS in Education, Certificate in Educational Administration, and finally her PHD in Education from the University of Buffalo. Clarice taught for a total of 65 years in the Buffalo School System.
Moving to Richmond, VA, in 2001, Clarice continued to teach through VCU. She then decided to substitute for the Petersburg and Chesterfield Public School Systems. She retired in 2013. Her Faith, Her family, and Teaching were her loves.
Clarice was a member of Emmanuel Temple SDA Church where she taught Sabbath School. She also visited regularly Calvary Bible Church in Mount Laurel, NJ...her home away from home. She loved to travel seeing the world and God's majestic handiwork. We her children were well traveled, educated and loved. She enjoyed entertaining. Cooking recipes passed down from her Mother all while filling our home with laughter and conversation. Our Mom loved life. She lived every day to its fullest. Always kind and always giving.
She is survived by her brother, Arthur Trellis; three children, Michael, Lisa, and David; ten grandchildren (one deceased); two great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; multitude of cousins; and beloved family and friends.
