Cody Alan Smith, 20, born August 25, 1992 in Hopewell, Va., passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2013 in Hampton,Va. Va. He was preceded in death by his brother, Christopher Michael Pillow, his grandparents, Godrey S. Powell and Nannie Margie Campbell, aunt, Judy Powell Hassell and grandfather, James D. Smith, Sr. Cody was a Private in the National Guard, Alpha-1-111th Field Artillery of Sandson, Va., as a cannoneer. He was an EMT and volunteered for the Hopewell Emergency Squad and a volunteer firefighter for Jefferson Park Fire Department, Company 5, in Prince George, Va. He enjoyed fishing and loved his work as an EMT and fireman and was excellent in his knowledge and how to take care of those that needed his help. From the early age of 10 years old, Cody wanted to be a soldier in the U.S. Army and was finally able to achieve that dream. Cody is survived by his mother, Jeannie Powell Smith and fiance’, Frankie Acevedo of Hopewell, Va. and her family including cousins, Teresa Dalton and her husband, Pee Wee, of Rustburg, Va., Kim Voiles Gill and her husband, Bobby and their daughter, Kayla Gill and her son, Kannon Osborne, all of Prince George, Va., Nicole Hassell and her children, Zane, Nadiya, and Mason Hassell and Jackson Lane all of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; great-aunt, Margaret Campbell Manley of Big Island, Va. Cody is also survived by his father, James D. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Margie Smith and his family including, step-brothers, Michael Rieves and Justin Messer; grandmother, Belle Smith and many other family members and friends. Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013 at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens in Prince George, Va. Condolences may be registered at
