Elsie Mae Chapman Atkins, 92, of Hopewell, died July 23, 2021. Born and raised in Hopewell, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Lemuel and Mary Munford Chapman. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and devoted many hours volunteering in her community and church. She was a graduate of James Madison University (then Madison College) and retired from teaching in the Hopewell school system. Elsie Mae was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, a former trustee at the Appomattox Regional Library, a past president of the Hopewell Junior Women’s Club, a member of the Hopewell Women’s Club, and past member of Jordan Point Country Club. She loved dancing with Melvin, singing in the church choir, and teaching at Hopewell High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, George Melvin Atkins, and her son, David Chapman Atkins. She is survived by her son, George Atkins; daughter, Daphne Atkins; grandson, Matthew Chapman Jones; granddaughter, Caleigh Atkins; great grandson, Bentley David Atkins; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday July 28, 2021 at First United Methodist Church with Rev Scott Honaker officiating.
