Joan Hawkins Slater, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong resident of Petersburg, she was predeceased by her husband, John Parke Slater, Sr., her parents, Alexander Vaughan and Lois Mayfield Hawkins, and a sister, Alexa Hawkins Westfall. She is survived by her children, Lind Slater Reiss (Reinhart) of Chesterfield, John Parke Slater, Jr. (Carol) of Sandston, and Leigh Slater Green (Will) of Chester; her grandchildren, Marshall H. Reiss of San Francisco, CA, Matthew W. Reiss, II of Dugspur, VA, Andrew Parke Slater and Amanda Carol Slater both of Richmond, her sister, Leta Hawkins Brunner (George) of Findlay, OH, and her brother-in-law, Joseph P. Westfall, Jr. of Colonial Heights. Joan was an avid genealogist and a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Petersburg. She was also a member of the Colonel John Bannister Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and United Daughters of the Confederacy. A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery.
