Jonathan David Smith, 40, passed away on February 12, 2023, surrounded by loving family and friends. Jonathan lived his life with joy and passion in spite of his 11-year battle with cancer. He had a big heart, strength of a true warrior, lived for the Lord, and led a life of service to others. Jonathan was a friend to all, and believed, "there were no strangers in the world, only friends he hadn't met yet."
He married the love of his life, Jennifer, and they shared 12 ½ years together raising 4 children. He upheld all the values taught to him by the Boy Scouts of America, and as an Eagle Scout, he passed along those values to his children and many others along the way. Jonathan joined the Fire/EMS community as a passionate volunteer firefighter with Company 7 in Stuarts Draft, VA, until his acceptance as a career firefighter with Augusta County, VA. Jonathan faithfully served his community until his battle with cancer began. Even still, Jonathan did not let that define him or slow him down and continued to volunteer as a firefighter when able. He brought joy to so many, touching every heart along the way. You could always find him working outside, helping others, performing living history and re-enactments, or Dutch oven cooking over an open fire with his cast iron. Of course, he also loved to camp and fish.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his grandparents, and he is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Lynn Smith; his four children, Lillian Grace Smith, Jacob Kurtz Flickinger, Christopher James Flickinger (Amber S. Siddiqui), and Madeleine Christine Stathos (David A. Stathos); his parents, John David Smith (Vernona Smith) and Jacquelyn Frances May (Gloyd L. May); his brother, Matthew C. Smith (Miriam Smith); his nephew, Aiden Thomas and niece, Isobel Kate; and many beloved cousins, extended family, firefighting brothers and sisters, as well as many friends. Jonathan David Smith was an amazing individual whose loss will be felt by all.
