Adele H. Phelps

Adele H. Phelps, of Hopewell, VA, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 after a period of declining health. She was born in Hopewell, the daughter of the late Claude W. and Mary H. Harris. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Charles N. “Chuck” Phelps; brothers, Claude W. “Simp” Harris and Oliver Lee “Butch” Harris; and a sister, Catherine Bobb. She was lifelong resident of Hopewell. She was co-owner and operator of Phelp’s Pure Oil and Citgo services stations in Hopewell for more than 30 years. She also worked at Wyatt’s and Nida’s Florists in Hopewell. She enjoyed tending her yard, especially her azaleas and dogwoods. She is survived by her sons, Kent B. Phelps, and Charles N. “Chip” Phelps, Jr. and his wife, Kathy; grandsons, Lee T. Phelps, and Brian N. Phelps and wife, Dina; great granddaughter, Marian H. Phelps; sister, Joyce Harris; sister in law, Jean Kay Harris; beloved friend and caregiver, Jeannie Shultz. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 820 W. Broadway Ave. Hopewell, VA 23860. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hopewell Chapel. The Rev. Joyce Harville will be officiating. Interment will follow in Appomattox Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church in Hopewell, VA.
