Alan Dale Roddy, age 67, passed away at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond, VA on October 18, 2022. He was born March 16, 1955 in Florida to Dovie Roddy and Grady (Dick) Roddy. As a military child, he moved around during school years and joined the Army at a young age of 18. When he was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, he met the love of his life, Veera Lewis. They were married on June 4, 1977 in Harker Heights Texas. Their only child, daughter, Leslie Ann, was born June 9, 1981 in Germany. They visited many places as a military couple including Fort Hood, Texas; Lucius Clay Kaserne, Germany; Fort Gillam, Georgia; Fort Lewis, Washington; and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, until Alan retired in 1999 after 26 years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer Three. After retirement from the US Army, Alan and family settled in Chester, VA. Alan worked for the Defense supply Center in Richmond VA, where he retired a second time in 2021.
Alan was very proud of his military career and was a veteran of the Gulf War. He made some lasting friends in and out of the Army. He enjoyed spending time with beloved wife, Veera, going on cruises, attending concerts, making scenic drives through the countryside and cooking together. He enjoyed spending time with his daughter and granddaughters, attending all school events and concerts, enjoying the outdoors, fishing and walking trails, and doing diamond art. Alan's devotion to family was unmeasurable. Alan's honesty, loyalty, work ethic, and willingness to help everyone made him a memorable person to many and a very sought-after person in his field.
He is deeply missed by his devoted daughter, Leslie Ann Goodwin; his adoring granddaughters, Emma Lynn Goodwin and Savanah Grace Goodwin; his older sister, Brenda and husband, John Ellis; his older brother, Ron and wife, Theo Roddy; his sister-in-law, Velesa and husband, Pat Sullivan; his brother-in-law, Vince Lewis and Richard Gregory; and his nieces, Ann Ellis, Erin Haynes, and Kathleen Sullivan. Alan was preceded in death by his wife, Veera V. Roddy; his father and mother, Grady and Dovie Roddy; and his mother and father-in-law, Elfriede and Athanie Lewis.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service for Alan on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Road, Chester, Virginia. Interment will take place at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at a later date.
