Albert Garrett Mathias, 90, of Church Road, VA, died Saturday, March 9, 2019. Born and raised in Moorefield, WV, he was the son of the late William Gilkerson and Clara Shanholtzer Mathias. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Hattie Ralls and Dorothy Mathias, and a brother, Harry Mathias. Albert was a U.S. Army veteran and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He worked as a corrections officer before moving to Virginia, where he spent the remainder of his career as a Deputy for Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Department. Albert was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was very active in his community. He was a member of Wilson Hebron Ford Ruritan Club and Dinwiddie Masonic Lodge No. 136 for over 50 years. He enjoyed woodworking, especially building bluebird houses for the Ruritan Club. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Christina Lee Mathias; his children, Larry Albert Mathias (Charlene), Debra Mathias Mahoney (Pat), Randall Garrett Mathias (Lynn), and Mitchell Lee Mathias (Beverly); grandchildren, Chris Mathias (Sandra), Brandy Harter (Brad), Heather Sutton (Mike), Rhianna Watkins (Nick), Megan Booth (Dustin), and Courtney Winn (Ben), 15 great-grandchildren as well as several step great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Davenport; brother, Donald Edward Mathias, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the Dinwiddie Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Interment with Military Funeral Honors and Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery.
