McCANTS JR, Albert Eugene “Mac”, 80, of Wood Duck Drive, of Virginia Beach, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 19, 2014. Mac was a loving husband, a great father, an involved grandfather and positive influence, a caring friend, and now a Guardian Angel to everyone. Born in Petersburg, Va to the late Albert E. and Annie H. McCants, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Gayle S. McCants and a daughter, Laurie S. McCants. Mac was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and was employed as an engineer for British American Tobacco in Mexico and Central America and later as a civil engineer for Allied Signal/Honeywell Corporation until his retirement in 1993. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Virginia Beach Aquarium for over 10 years and also volunteered at the Military Aviation Museum in Pungo. Mac was a past president of the Chester Civitan Club, a past member of Chester United Methodist Church, an active member of the Sandbridge Civic League, and a current member of Sandbridge Community Chapel United Methodist Church. Mac is survived by his son, Albert E. McCants III and wife, Joyce C. McCants; daughter, Kimberley T. Smigo; son, Daren F. McCants; five grandchildren, Albert E. McCants IV, Emily G. Smigo, M. Tyler Smigo, C. Eric Smigo, Carter S. McCants; sister, Ann M. Carter, and nephew, Nelson W. Carter III. Mac enjoyed boating and traveling to Florida on annual vacations as well as sailing the high seas to the Caribbean Islands. He enjoyed learning facts about marine wildlife and aviation, especially during the WWI and WWII era. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm, Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Va. A memorial service will be at 3:00 pm, Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the Sandbridge Community Chapel United Methodist Church by Dr. Clyde DeLoach, pastor. Arrangements are under the direction of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg, Virginia.
