Alfred Payne Devers

Alfred Payne Devers, 92, of Chester, VA, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2020. Born in Covington, VA, he was the son of Charles Payne Devers and Margaret Keyser Devers. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Nancy Lampman Devers. Alfred is survived by his sons, Berkley Devers (Diane), Michael Devers (Arlene), Kevin Devers (Nancy) and John Devers (Christina); daughters, Candy Ezell (Wilson) and Margie Smith (Jamey); sisters, Betty Downey and Patricia Carter; brother, Charles Devers (Janice); and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and additional extended family.

He was employed for multiple years by the United States Postal Service before moving to Hopewell, where he started a career with Firestone Fibers and Textiles and retired after more than 25 years of service. Over the years, Alfred enjoyed spending time with his family, chasing deer while hunting at the “Ponderosa,” golfing with his brother and co-workers, and staying in touch with his C.B. Radio friends. His easy-going and charming nature, which likely contributed to his long life, will be remembered and cherished by many who knew him.
