Alfred â??Alâ? Conway Sacra, 81, of Hopewell died Thursday, June 10, 2010 in Southside Regional Medical Center. Mr. Sacra was born in Richmond, VA and had made his home in the tri-city area for most of his life. Al served his country with pride from 1951 to 1953, having served in Korea from 1952-1953. He was a 1947 graduate of Hopewell High School and was a life-long Blue Devil Fan. Al was a member of Woodman of the World Beech Camp #264, served the City of Hopewell as a representative on the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority. Al worked over 38 years for Allied Signal Corporation, now known as Honeywell where he retired in 1992 as a Unit Supervisor. Many young friends and family also knew him as â??a jolly old elfâ?. Al was a very active and dedicated member of First Baptist Church where through the years he served as a youth leader, Sunday school teacher and an usher. He was also an ordained deacon and member of â??The Singing Saintsâ?, served on the Shut-in Ministry Team and was also part of the â??Stew Crewâ?. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Willard James Sacra, Sr. and Ida W. Sacra; sisters, Elsie Hendricks, Gladys Myers and Virginia Boyette. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bonnie Hudson Sacra, two sons, Mark D. Sacra and his wife Nora of Chesterfield, VA, Chad R. Sacra and his wife Barbara of Roanoke, VA.; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Granddaddy will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The family will receive friends Friday, June 11, 2010 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 12:00 Noon in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Raymond officiating.
