Alice Christopher Maitland

Alice Christopher Maitland, 79, of Sutherland, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013. Born in McKenney, VA, she was the daughter of the late Willie Ernest and Hallie Moore Christopher. She worked at T.S. Beckwith & Co. in Petersburg for over 30 years. Mrs. Maitland was an active member of Hawkins Memorial Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and volunteering at the church’s thrift store, “The Country Store.” Mrs. Maitland had a lifelong love for music. She loved to play the piano and enjoyed singing with the Glory Bound Singers for numerous years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Willie Christopher, Jr., Joyce Ann Christopher, Cecil Christopher, Joe Christopher, and Betty Lou Fisher. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Joyce C. “Spike” Maitland; sister, Louise C. Bishop and husband, Bobby; brothers, Bobby Christopher and wife, Joyce, and Tommy Christopher, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Greenfield Assisted Living and Crater Community Hospice for their compassionate care. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 4th at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service with The Reverend George Whipple officiating. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
