Alma Seward Lane, 101, died May 28, 2007 at her home in Surry after a long illness. She was the widow of Joseph W. Lane. Born November 21, 1905, she was the daughter of the late William E. Seward and Annie Mae Savedge Seward. She was also predeceased by her son, Kenneth W. Lane, a sister, Louise Gwaltney, and a brother, William E. â??Billâ? Seward, Jr.
She is survived by a sister, Mary S. Harris of Surry; a daughter-in-law, Erma Jo Lane Fielden and her husband, Marvel; grandsons, Billy Lane and his wife, Beth, and Steve Lane and his wife, Sue, all of Richmond. She leaves seven great-grandchildren; Chris, Will, Maddy, Joe, Libby, Connor, and Jack; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She and her husband, Joe, were lifetime members of Mooreâ??s Swamp Baptist Church where they were baptized together in 1917. In earlier years she was active in WMU, Sunday school, and the choir. Joe was a life deacon of the church, and at the time of her death Alma was the oldest living member of the church. She was a great cook, especially loved raising flowers and gardening, and at the age of 92 had a two acre vegetable garden. She was known to speak her mind and you always knew where you stood with Alma.
Funeral services will be held in Mooreâ??s Swamp Baptist Church, Elberon, on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Danny Blaylock and the Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes, Wakefield, on Wednesday evening, 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Mooreâ??s Swamp Baptist Church, 2300 Runnymede Rd., Dendron, Va 23839, or to Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Richmond, Va 23226-3784.
