Almon E. “Tommy” Thompson, 81, of Hopewell, VA passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Born in Malden, MA he was the son of the late Raymond Francis and Martha Lillian Towse Thompson; and was also preceded in death by two sons, Stephen and Keith Riley; a sister, Dorothy Lang; and a brother, Ray Thompson, Jr. Tommy retired from the United States Army after 33 years of dedicated service to his country. After retiring from the military, he went on to work and retired from Honeywell after 20 years of service. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the Hopewell Optimist Club, a member of the OBGCC Car Club; and was a board member for the Keystone Tractor Museum in Colonial Heights. Mr. Thompson is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joan Smith Thompson; a son, Daniel Brett and wife, Paula; two grandchildren, Christian B. Thompson and Jordan D. Thompson; a sister, Jane Welch; one brother, Peter “Pete” Thompson; son, David Riley; and numerous extended family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 3512 Virginia St., Hopewell, VA 23860 with the Rev. Kenneth Hendricks, officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Merchant’s Hope Memorial Gardens, Prince George, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to, Wreaths Across America, P.O.
