Alta Ruth Smith

Alta Ruth Ange Smith, 80, of Hopewell, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday October 6, 2016 with her husband by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Ruth Browning Ange; daughter, Linda Smith; sons, Michael Smith, Joey Smith; and her brother, Marshall Ange. Alta moved to Hopewell during her childhood. It was there that she met her husband, Thomas Richard Smith Sr., the love of her life; the couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on October 13, 2016. She had a love for cooking and loved to entertain. Alta was a very inviting person and no one was ever a stranger. Her home was always a warm welcome place for all. Her greatest love was for her family and her house was always filled with wonderful baked goods, love and contagious laughter. Alta is survived by her husband, Thomas Richard Smith Sr.; daughter, Wanda Witherspoon and her husband, Dixon; sons, Thomas Richard Smith Jr. and his wife, Becky, Larry Smith and his wife, Mertees, Kyle Smith; grandchildren, Denis Smith, Heather Smith-Ward, Jim Witherspoon, James Smith and his wife, Kaleah, Melissa Smith Martin and her husband, Brandon, Jessi Smith Morgan and her husband, Aaron, Taylor Witherspoon Schipani and her husband, Matthew, Anna Witherspoon, Emily Smith and her fiancé, Josh, Dallas Smith, Bryson Smith, Monet Smith, Marielle Smith; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Lyman Ange and his wife, Doris; many loved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Alta had many special friends including, Willie Stahl and his wife, Jean, Robert Stahl, and the staff at Intrepid Hospice. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Monday October 10, 2016 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Tuesday October 11, 2016 at the Cameron Avenue Church of Christ 601 Cameron Ave, Colonial Heights, VA 23834 with interment to follow in Appomattox Cemetery.
