Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Alvin R. Barr
Alvin Roosevelt Barr, 77, entered eternal peace on Friday, June 1, 2018. He was born in Chilhowie, VA, on April 29, 1941, to the late McKinley Roosevelt Barr and Lora Mae Hamm Barr. Alvin is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Yoneko Nagata Barr; his daughters, Janie Barr, Paula Carrigan (Dan), Colleen Moore, and Tina Barr; and his grandchildren Corey, Carey, and Hannah Daniels, and Emily Carrigan. Alvin is also survived by one brother, Don Barr (Myrna); and four sisters, Mary Evans (Bill), Brenda Crouse (Harold), Linda Stillwell (Ronald), and Barbara Taylor (Greg). He was preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Wyatt (Bob); and four brothers, Ernest, James “Lowell”, Walter “Pete”, and Cecil Barr. Alvin attended Chilhowie High School before enlisting in the US Army in 1960. He proudly served his country for 20 years, including service in the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Army, Alvin worked for the Petersburg Sheriff’s Department and eventually retired from civil service employment at Ft. Lee, VA. More than just about anything, he loved fishing and hunting! Alvin was at peace and happy in his “jon boat” on the water and in his deer stand in the woods. He was also a skilled gardener who grew a flourishing garden for many years, sharing tomatoes, cucumbers, string beans, squash, bell peppers, watermelon—you name it!—with friends and neighbors. Alvin was a member of the American Legion Post 2 and Southside Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA. Above all else, he loved his wife and family. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at the funeral home. Interment with full military honors will immediately follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Rd., South Prince George, VA, 23805. The family would like to thank the many caregivers at Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center and Heritage Hall Blackstone, Pastor Arthur Lands of Southside Baptist Church, and numerous friends for their loving support.
