Alvin Wilson Blaha

February 26, 1940 — June 8, 2016

Alvin Wilson Blaha, 76, a lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County, died Wednesday, June 08, 2016. He was the son of the late Louis Joseph Blaha, Sr. and Margaret Marie Cerny Blaha. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Blaha retired from Hercules, Inc. after 34 years of service and was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of 4-H and Future Farmers of America, holding the Honorary Virginia FFA State Degree and the Honorary American FFA Degree, and was a lifetime member of the Cavalier Athletic Club. He was actively involved and held offices in numerous agriculture associations to include: President and member of the Board of Virginia Soybean Association, President and member of Board of Southern States Southside Co-op, President and member of Board of Dinwiddie County Farm Bureau, member of Virginia Soybean Check Off Board, founder and Chairman of the Board of Virginia Cotton Growers Association, Chairman of Virginia Cotton Check Off Board, Founding Director and member of the Executive Committee of United Soybean Board, member of the board of Agri-Business Council, Board of Trustees of Virginia Farm Bureau AgPac, member of Congressman Norman Sisisky Agricultural Advisory Committee, member of Congressman Randy Forbes Agricultural Advisory Committee, Chairman of Dinwiddie County Extension Leadership Council, member of the Virginia Tech CALS Committee, member and Vice-Chairman of Virginia State Ag Advisory Committee. He served on the Dinwiddie County Planning Commission, the Dinwiddie County Soil & Water Board (Appomattox River District), the Steering Committee of Virginia Beginning Farmers & Ranchers Committee, and the Virginia State University President Search Committee. In addition, he was a member and Past President of St. John’s Catholic Church where he served on the Finance Committee and was the founder and coordinator of the Farm Bureau Legislative Day. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nina Atkinson Blaha; daughter, Cindy A. Blaha; son, Eric M. Blaha (Debra); granddaughters, Laurel A. Bishop (Carl), Ashleigh L. Andusko (Matt), Amanda B. Tudor (Donald), and Sindy B. Hayes; great-grandchildren, Camden W. Bishop and Cadence E. Andusko; brothers, Louis “Sonny” J. Blaha, Jr. (Thelma) and David E. Blaha (Janine); brother-in-law, Eugene D. Atkinson (Anne), numerous nieces and nephews, and one very special friend, Mr. Edward C. Jarratt (Peggy). A wake service will be held on Thursday, June 9th at 5:00 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with a visitation to follow from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, June 10th at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church with interment to follow in Southlawn Memorial Park.
