Andrew Grant Sutherland, 84, of Petersburg, widower of Sarah Beatrice Adams Sutherland passed away on Sunday January 29, 2012. Mr. Sutherland was retired as a civil engineer with the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service. Reaching the rank of captain, he received many medals and awards, such as the Bronze Star with Combat, â??Vâ? Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, WW II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star,
Vietnam Service/Vietnam Campaign with two Gold stars, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Vietnam Public Works and Communications Medal. Following retirement he worked 12 years with the Virginia Department of Mental Health and Retardation as Director of Architecture and Engineering Services. He was a loyal friend to all. He was an active member of the Waukegan, Illinois Lodge #78AFAM, the Grand Lodge OF/2, AFAM, Springfield, IL and the Military Officers Assoc. of America. Friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A full military funeral service will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
