Ann Starnes Johnson, 78, of Fairfax, VA died on May 23, 2004 at the INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Born on September 2, 1925 in Petersburg, VA, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Carson and Audrey Owen Starnes. A sister, Shirley Starnes Stone, preceded her in death. She attended Petersburg Schools and graduated in 1942 from Petersburg High School. She attended Business School and then worked for the Petersburg Progress-Index Newspaper. In 1952 while working at the Fort Lee Quartermaster Board she met Richard Johnson, who was stationed there and they were later married at the Fort Meyer, VA Chapel. As an Army wife she accompanied her husband on assignments in Washington, DC., Pittsburgh, PA., and Monterey, CA. In 1955 the family moved to Teheran, Iran where her husband was assigned as Assistant Army Attache at the American Embassy. On their return to the States, they lived in Washington again and then Ft. Leavenworth, KS and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. On her husband’s Retirement the family lived in Northbrook, IL until 1975 when they moved to a permanent home in Fairfax, VA. She was often a single mom while her husband was serving in Korea and Vietnam and during these times she and their son lived in Colonial Heights. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survived by her husband of 51 years, LTC USA (Ret) Richard A. Johnson; son, Steve Johnson and his wife Kim; granddaughter, Lauren. Family will receive friends at J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 103 S. Adams St., Petersburg on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 from 7-8:30 pm. Interment will be at the U.S. Military Academy Cemetery in New York on June 22nd. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crater Community Hospice, 840 W. Roslyn Rd., Colonial Heights, VA 23834.
