Anna Marie (Hartman) Bateman, 72, was born into the loving arms of her parents on Sunday, December 31, 1950, and passed away into the loving arms of Jesus on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. Anna was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, to the late Frank Raymond Hartman and Freda Catherine (Wolford) Hartman, both originally from Hampshire County, West Virginia.
Growing up, Anna had the opportunity, as a part of a military family, to reside in different parts of the United States and the world, including California and Germany, as well as her hometown, Romney, West Virginia. She graduated from Hampshire High School in Romney, West Virginia in 1968. She next attended Potomac State College where she graduated with an Associate's Degree in Secondary Education/English, and then moved to Huntington, West Virginia, to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education/English and Library Science at Marshall University, home of the "Thundering Herd." Shortly thereafter, she became a military wife and lived in Texas, Georgia, and again in Germany.
Following that, she settled in Virginia, and began a civilian career at Fort Lee, Virginia, taking as many independent, correspondence, and group courses as she was offered by her employer in order to expand her body of knowledge and advance in her career. She often traveled with her team in support of various projects to places such as Washington, DC, and Redondo Beach, California. During this time, she greatly enjoyed listening to the Q94 radio station throughout the day in pursuit of winning various call-in contests for prizes such as t-shirts, tickets, and other items. Her favorite prize was a brand new VCR, which worked perfectly for years, well into the DVD age.
She was retired from Federal Civil Service on Fort Lee, Virginia, where she was employed as a Computer Analyst for many years. During the course of her career, she received numerous awards in appreciation of her contributions to the defense of her beloved country.
A favorite activity that Anna enjoyed was decorating her home for each holiday, particularly a "Christmas" Tree that she updated for each major holiday such as Valentine's, St. Patrick's, and Independence Day, among others. She also doted on her precious cats, spoiling them with special songs, yummy treats, fun toys, and plenty of petting and cuddles.
Her Christian faith was very important to her and she enjoyed sharing scripture and encouragement through various forms of social media to her friends and family both near and far, as well as participating in Bible studies. She particularly enjoyed studying scripture nightly with her mother over the phone. She was a member of The Heights Baptist Church.
Anna was formerly married to and is survived by Cecil Owens Gordon II, and George Enmond Bateman. Also remaining to remember Anna are two children, Monica "Nikki" Anne Gordon Tolliver and Melissa Anne Gordon; a stepson, Larry Wayne Bateman, who was just as dear to her as her daughters; seven grandchildren, Nicholas Shawn Curry, James Evan Curry (Amy), Michael Ryan Curry, Bryan Alan Tolliver (Camryn), Zachariah Daniel Tolliver, Riley Wayne Bateman, and Mahayla Lynn Bateman; four great-grandchildren, Bryan and Camryn's son, Ezekiel Bryan Tolliver, and James and Amy's three children; a sister, Barbara Jean Hartman Lamberson Allen; a brother, Gerald Raymond Hartman; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom dearly miss her but yet rejoice that she is in the loving presence of her Savior, full of everlasting joy, and free from pain and suffering at last.
A funeral service will be be held at 2pm, Thursday, January 19, 2023, with visitation time beginning at 1pm, at J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home of Chester, Virginia, with the Rev. Ronald West officiating. Interment will take place immediately following at Sunset Memorial Park.
