Anne Moncrief Layman died, Friday, September 29, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Harold Moncrief, Sr. and Mildred Bryant Moncrief; infant brother, Robert Bryant Moncrief; son-in-law, Jeffrey Carol Porter, Sr. and grandson, Jeffrey Carl Porter, Jr. She was also preceded in death by sisters-in-law, Frances Garber, Drusilla Pasley, Mary Layman, Arlene Layman, and 5 brothers-in-law, Carl Garber, Charlie Pasley, Lawrence Akers, Clifford Willis and Frank Layman Jr. She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Dr. David Arthur Layman, Sr.; 7 daughters, Tammy VanDecker (Scott), Kimberly Reedy (Ron), Sarah Elizabeth Royal (Victor), Jennifer Lotti (Joe), Mary Layman, Dr. Laura Burijon (Ed) and Deborah Layman; 3 sons, Paul Nguyen (Nancy), David Layman, Jr. (Laura), and Dr. John Layman (Margaret). Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, John Nguyen, Carol Nguyen, Shawn VanDecker (Jayne), Tiffany VanDecker, Hunter Reedy, Hannah Reedy, Stephen Crafton (Jessica), Ben Crafton (Destiny), James Royal, Victoria Royal, Michael Layman (Suzie), Daniel Lotti, Rhayne Layman, Abby Burijon, Josiah Burijon, Sadie Layman, Noah Layman, and Adam Layman and one great-grandchild Kyrene Crafton. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Moncrief, Jr. (Brenda); sister, Ellen Hollopeter (Gary); brother-in-law, Daniel Layman (Mary); sisters-in-law, Ardine Akers and Lois Willis and many nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to her immediate family, she treasured the long friendship of Cora Blanding. Anne was born in Richmond and graduated from Hermitage High School. She earned a RN-BSN degree from the MCV-VCU School of Nursing. Her husband's career brought her rapidly growing family to Hopewell, Virginia. After her children were in school, she worked in the career she loved as a nurse for Petersburg General Hospital for 12 years. She later worked at John Randolph Hospital until she retired in 1996. Anne devoted herself to her family and caring for others her entire life. Every birthday and holiday was celebrated in spectacular fashion. She enjoyed crocheting, and was always busy baking, cooking, and gardening. She cared for many children, animals and people in the community with her loving, giving spirit with a special fondness for babies. She enjoyed watching her 10 children grow up and start their own families and careers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Anne Moncrief Layman Nursing Scholarship Fund John Randolph Foundation, 112 North Main Street Hopewell, VA 23860. The family would like to thank Susan Broda, Sharon Roberton and the At Home Care Hospice Team, Joanne, Teresa, Catarra, Tiffany, Kim and Liz for their caring support during Anne's illness. A celebration of Anne's life will take place, 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the Beacon Theatre, 401 N. Main Street Hopewell, VA 23860. Interment will be private. The family is being served by the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
