Anne Middleton Bundy Thurman Lewis, 94, of Petersburg passed away peacefully on Monday, September 22, 2014 at the Petersburg Home for Ladies. Born July 4, 1920 in Norfolk, Virginia, Anne was the daughter of the late Susan Little Bundy and Nathan Hollister Bundy, Sr. She was a graduate of Chatham Hall in Chatham, Virginia and Sweet Briar College in Amherst, Virginia. Anne married Robert Gibson Thurman and lived in Cleveland, Ohio and Greensboro, North Carolina until Robert passed away in 1947. She and her daughter Ellen, an infant at the time, moved to Virginia Beach where she began her career as a successful real estate agent for Duck’s Realty. Anne married James Rhodes Lewis in 1954 and they lived happily together in Petersburg for over 50 years. Anne was a devoted member of Christ and Grace Episcopal Church and served for many years as the Secretary. She was well known in Petersburg for her garden, her tennis (she had a mean drop shot) and for her more than twenty years serving on the Board of the American Cancer Society and their Reach for Recovery program. Anne adored her family and loved spending time with them and above all, she considered them to be her true fortune.
Anne is survived by her daughter Ellen Reid Thurman, of Petersburg, her son, James Rhodes Lewis, Jr. and his wife, Aurelia Brown Lewis of Richmond and her brother, Nathan Hollister Bundy, Jr. and his wife, Marie Bundy of Norfolk. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Anne Aurelia Huger Lewis and Eliza Hollister Lewis and seven nieces, Carol Lewis Vest, Dorcas Lewis Burton, Anne Bundy McIver, Harriet McIver Arnold, Susan Bundy Etheridge, Anne Bundy Estes, and Marie Bundy Estabrook. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, James Rhodes Lewis, and her sister, Mary MacGeorge Bundy McIver Etheredge. A service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, September 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church in Petersburg with a reception immediately following in the church parish hall for family and friends.
