Anthony Charles Santago

Anthony Charles Santago (Major, U.S. Army, retired) of Petersburg, Virginia died on November 8th, 2015. Charlie was born in Southington, Connecticut on January 15, 1920, the fifth of seven children of Italian immigrants from Caserta, Pietro (Pete) and Julia Piteo Santagata. Charlie enlisted in the Connecticut National Guard in 1938, joining the U.S. Army in 1939 as an infantry private upon graduation from Lewis High School in Southington. Following basic training in Maine, he was stationed in Panama, Mississippi, Colorado, France, Germany, Korea, and Fort Lee, Virginia. He retired from the service in 1959, having risen to the rank of major. Following his military career, he served as the Review and Analysis Branch Manager for the Federal Civil Service in Richmond, retiring in 1980. Charlie was an avid reader, gourmet cook, gardener, and stock market trader. Charlie was predeceased by his wife of 31 years, Wanda Oleski (changed from the original Polish, Olszewska) Santago, whom he met and married in Paris...
