Archibald Davis Andrews Marks, 85, of Prince George, Virginia, died Wednesday, March 2, 2006 at her home. Mrs. Marks?s health had been declining for several years. Born on September 28, 1920 in Ashland, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Mordecai Walker Andrews and Georgia Hill Andrews. Charles Hardaway Marks, her husband of fifty-three years, died in 2004. She is survived by a daughter, Martha Dare Marks and her husband, Robert Wetherby Shaw, Jr. of Alexandria, Virginia; a son, Charles Harrison Marks of Prince George, Virginia; and a granddaughter, Marian Hardaway Shaw of Alexandria, Virginia. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Phyllis Black Andrews of Hanover, Virginia; her brother-in-law and his wife, Bryant Mayes Marks, Sr. and Frances Evans Marks of Hopewell, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Mordecai Woolfolk Andrews, Sr. of Hanover, Virginia. Mrs. Marks was a graduate of Edmund Pendleton High School in Caroline. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1941 from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, where she was member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1950, she was awarded a Master of Arts degree from the University of Virginia. Prior to receiving her master?s degree, she taught history and government at Rockville High School in Hanover County and Henry Clay High School in Ashland. From 1950 through 1955, she taught at Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. Mrs. Marks was a member of Merchants Hope Episcopal Church, where she co-chaired the committee that raised the funds to build the church Parish House. She was an honorary life member of the Appomattox Garden Club, a life member of the Historic Hopewell Foundation, and a former member of the Woman?s Club of Hopewell. A life long student of history, she enjoyed reading, gardening, and traveling. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday March 6, 2006 at Merchants Hope Episcopal Church, 11500 Merchants Hope Rd. in Prince George County, with interment to follow in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens.
