Arthur Larry Hipps

Arthur Larry Hipps, 90, of Hopewell, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2023. Larry was called home where his loving wife and two sons have been eagerly awaiting his arrival.

He was the son of the late Arthur W. Hipps who predeceased his late mother Helen Patton Hipps who later married his step-father, Claude Smithson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Stanley Hipps; his beloved sons, Danny and Chris Hipps; and his dear sister, Judy Hipps Tomlin; and brother-in-law Doug Tomlin. He always cherished and missed spending time with his extended family in Canton, NC, especially Frieda who was like a sister to him. Larry played football for the State champion Hopewell Blue Devils. He retired from Hercules after a lifetime of dedicated service and maintained lifelong friendships with many of his co-workers.

Larry enjoyed many hobbies with his wife Ellen who was the love of his life. They were most happy fishing together at Lake Chesdin, Burwells Bay, and the Outer Banks. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church and American Legion Auxiliary, and a life member and former Governor and Pilgrim at the Hopewell Moose Lodge, where the inseparable pair enjoyed time on the dance floor and great times with their many friends.

He is survived by three grandsons, Brent Hipps of Escondido, CA, Bryce Hipps (Ashley) of Chester, VA, and Zachary Hipps of Hopewell, VA, as well as two precious great granddaughters, Francie Bea and Millie Jane Hipps. The family wishes to give special thanks and recognition to Allison Gray, his devoted hospice nurse and close friend.

The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2023 at the Hopewell Moose Lodge, with a memorial service to follow.
