On Thursday, June 16, 2016 cancer claimed the life of Atwell Simmons Harrison, Sr. at the age of 81. However there was so much about him that this dreadful disease could not defeat: his fierce love for his family and friends, a strong work ethic, generosity toward all who knew him, honesty and loyalty beyond compare. A lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County, he was born June 9, 1935 to the late Lloyd Simmons Harrison and John Atwell Harrison, Jr. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Atwell “Johnny” Harrison, III and a son in law, William Woodrow Grissom. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 62 years, Della Culbertson Harrison; daughters Jennifer Harrison Smith (Pete), Betty Harrison Grissom, all of Dinwiddie; a son, Atwell Simmons Harrison, Jr. (Vicki) of Prince George; granddaughter, Kristin Elmore; grandsons; Jesse Biscoe, III, Joshua and Zachary Harrison; great grandson, Matthew Elmore; great granddaughters, Krystal and Amber Smith, and Autumn Turek; sisters, Peggy Harrison Haddon (Jim) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Dianne Harrison Wilkinson (Dick) of Sutherland; and his most faithful trusted companion Eliza Jane, whom some would call a dog but At and Liza would disagree. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. He was a retiree of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co. and having grown up on a farm, enjoyed being in nature whether making things grow or casting a line in the water. The family will receive friends at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22nd at the Dinwiddie Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 7:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert Rowland officiating. Interment will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 23rd at Southlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to either Smyrna Baptist Church, 18971 Carson Road, Dinwiddie, VA 23841 or Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805.
