Mrs. Barbara June Fitzwater passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, May 25, 2022 after a prolonged illness.
Originally from Alum Creek, WV, Mrs. Fitzwater was born to the Reverend Albert M. and Mrs. Hallie Mae Waldron on August 1, 1937, and was the youngest of five children. She is survived by her brother, David; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Waldron and Rachael Waldron.
Mrs. Fitzwater was the widow of US Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Robert L. Fitzwater, who preceded her in death in 2015 following 55 years of marriage. Mrs. Fitzwater took great pride in accompanying and supporting her husband at many duty stations across the country for more than 20 years.
A life-long homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Fitzwater enjoyed music, birdwatching, and days at the beach.
She is survived by her two children, daughter, Tonya R. Smith, of Chester, Virginia, and son, Ronald D. Fitzwater, of Blowing Rock, North Carolina; along with eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Road, Chester, Virginia with visitation on Sunday, May 29, 2022 from 1:00 PM - 1:55 PM, followed by a service at 2:00 PM. A celebration of Mrs. Barbara's life will follow at her home in Chester.
A committal service will be held at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Montford Landing Road, Jacksonville, NC on Friday, June 3 at 12:00 PM.
