Barbara Moseley

d. January 14, 2012

Barbara Pomeroy Moseley was born on January 17, 1948 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She grew up in Metuchen, NJ, and graduated from Metuchen High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, played basketball, softball and field hockey. Her childhood summers were spent in the Adirondack Mountains. She attended Cedar Crest College, and graduated from Finch College, in New York City, where she was a member of the Honor Society. Barbara moved to Petersburg, VA in the early 1970s, and taught fifth grade at AP Hill and VA Ave schools. She did modeling work for Thalhimers, which began through her winning the Thali (Thalhimers) Girl contest. Barbara married Dr. Charles Moseley, â??the love of my lifeâ?, in 1978. With marriage came four adored stepchildren, Gayle Sutton, Charles Moseley III (Chuck), Beth Carnes, and Kathy Sims, and then their spouses, Lisa Moseley, Raymond Carnes, and Ken Sims. She loved, and loved to spoil, her grandchildren: Tripp, Josh (Brindley), Hilary (husband, Austin Tackett), Liz, Marian, Charlie, Tommie, and Colden, and her great-grandson, Bryson Tackett. Her New Jersey and New York families were very important: Mary, Ann, Jack, Robert, Judy and Jake Otterbine in NJ, and Lois Stevenson, Leigh Cobb, Michael Stevenson (deceased), Janet Moon and her son, Bob, and George, Karen and Kevin Boles in NY. She is predeceased by her parents, Chauncey Godwin and Dorothea Pomeroy. She was instrumental in revitalizing the Heart Association in the Petersburg area. The true love of her volunteer life was Battersea, a Palladian style home built in 1768, currently under restoration, with which she participated from her first years in Petersburg. She thanks Leslie Nranjo-Lupold for initiating the Battersea Foundation, of which Barbara was president. She was a great golfer and was president of the Country Club of Petersburgâ??s ladies golf association for â??too many years to countâ?, she was also a member of Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Dornoch, Scotland. She loved traveling ad journeyed with Charles, with friends and alone, over the world, loving to meet and understand the people as much as to see the sights. Even when ill, she took some of the grandchildren to Romania and to Costa Rica, so that they could share in her love of the world. But the homes that she and Charlie shared in Petersburg and Coles Point were where she found her grounding. Barbara would like to thank all those at Virginia Caner Center, Heartland Hospice, Flo Danquah, and most especially, Janet Baskerville, for her many years and care, understanding, and friendship. Barbara loved music, dancing, her dogs, sports, travel, teaching, history, hunting, laughing. Most of all, she loved her family and friends. She truly will be missed. The celebration of her life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20th at Second Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, followed by a â??dancing receptionâ? at Country Club of Petersburg. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21st at Oakwood Cemetery in South Hill. A memorial service in her memory will be held at Coles Point UMC at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Battersea Foundation, 29 W. Bank St, Petersburg, VA, 23803 or Heartland Hospice, 1504 Santa Rosa Rd, Richmond, VA, 23229.
