Barbara Townsend Spain

Barbara Louise Townsend Spain, 90, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, August 28, 2023. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, on December 19, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Robert Peyton Townsend, Sr. and Alice Burton Townsend. Barbara was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Earl Spain; her daughter, Deborah Louise Spain; her great-granddaughter, Taylor R. Glomb; her sister, Delano "Kizzy" Colbert; and her brother, Robert "Bobby" P. Townsend, Jr.

Barbara was employed at Titmus Optical for many years. Upon retiring she worked for Ende Medical Practice. She was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She will be remembered as being selfless and always putting others before herself. She was a loving mother to her two daughters and an adoring wife to her husband of over 70 years. She cared deeply for her family; not out of obligation, but because of who she was as a person. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Barbara is survived by her devoted daughter, Linda Spain Emory; granddaughters, Heather E. Glomb (Drew, Sr.) and Shannon E. Emory; grandson, Robert Stewart Emory II (Michelle); great-granddaughters, Abby Emory, Mattie Emory, and Emma Jarratt; great-grandsons, Austin Emory and Edward Andrew Glomb, Jr.; great-great-grandson, Andrew Glomb; brother, David B. Townsend (Shirley); nephews, Bob Townsend (Jody), Kevin Townsend, and Travis Townsend (Bri); and many other extended family members and friends.

A graveside service will be held at Blandford Cemetery, 319 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, on Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11:00 AM.
