On the very day her mission began, Beneatha “Nity” Simmons, 53, of North Dinwiddie, Virginia completed her mission. Beneatha was predeceased by her Father, Harold “Dean” Brown and Mother, Dorothy Mayfield Brown of Wilsons, Virginia. Beneatha is survived by her husband of 21 years, Anthony “Dean” Simmons, Daughter; Chenece Brown, Son; Devon Simmons and 3 grandchildren; Isaiah Thompson, Xavier Jones, and Layla Simmons. Beneatha leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her 3 sisters; Pamela Joyner, Sharon Brown, Cheryl Brown, and 7 brothers; Harold Stith (Sandy), Alvin Brown, Barry Mayfield (Diana), Michael Mayfield (Rosa), Harold “Stefan” Brown (Kim), Erwin “Erp” Brown (Catherine), and Willard “Ivan/Willie” Brown. Additionally, Beneatha leaves behind a devoted uncle; Clinton “Dick” Mayfield (Anne) as well as a devoted niece; Kendra Prosise. Other devoted relatives and friends include but do not exclude: Joyce Street, Stella Seaborne, and Priscilla Vaughn. Beneatha began her education at Northside Elementary School in Dinwiddie, Virginia and later graduated from Dinwiddie County Senior High School in 1985. Before settling into her career, Beneatha was gainfully employed with Ames department store, American General Finance, Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg J & DR Court, and her final position as Clerk of Court with Colonial Heights General District Court in April of 2019. Beneatha has a broad list of achievements and accomplishments to include being the First African-American Female Clerk of Court for the Colonial Heights General District Court; President, President Elect, Mentorship, and Membership Chair; Member of the Advisory Committee and as Regional Representative for the Association of Clerks of the District Courts of Virginia; Certified Zumba instructor and Certified Fitness Warrior. Beneatha was an advocate for appreciating the smaller things in life. She was charismatic, loving, adventurous, and cherished spending time with friends and family. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, board/video games, roller coasters, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts! Prior to her health decline, Beneatha was a dedicated member of Calvary Temple Church in Petersburg, Virginia. The family of Beneatha Simmons would like to thank everyone for the cards, flowers, and heartfelt expressions of sympathy shown prior to and following her departure.
