Bennett Stephen Nelson was born on January 19, 1946 in Astoria Queens, New York. His parents, Peter and Clementine Nelson welcomed their second son into the world just at sunrise.
Bennett joined the US Navy on September 24, 1963 shortly after graduating high school. Because of his confidence, intelligence and stature Bennett was selected to represent the US Navy on the Honor Guard detail as the Navy flag bearer in 1965 for two historical events: the anniversary of President John F Kennedy‘s death and the presidential inauguration for Lyndon B. Johnson. Bennett then transferred to the USS Intrepid to serve in Vietnam; he was honorably discharged on September 23, 1969.
Bennett returned to New York and attended college. It was because of his love for sports as well as athletic ability that he received a basketball scholarship from the Richmond Professional Institute now known as Virginia Commonwealth University.
Bennett worked and retired as a Human Resource Manager for the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services as well as an Adjunct Professor at VCU.
Bennett was married to Sharon Marie Nelson who loved, adored, and cared for him until he passed away peacefully on the evening of January 26, 2021. Bennett loved his wife and made her feel so cherished in their life together. He was a vivid storyteller and is affectionately remembered as a soft and well-spoken gentleman. His strongest traits were his generosity for others, infectious humor, his love for history, and his intelligence and persistence in research. If you had a question, Bennett would find the answer. He is very much loved by those he has touched in life and most of all his loving wife Sharon.
Bennett is survived by his wife: Sharon Marie Nelson, his son (from his previous marriage): Bennett S. Nelson II (Laura), granddaughters; Emmalyn, April, and Brynnlee, and mother-in-law Sung Hi Carroll.
