Bernard Joseph Goodyear, Jr. passed away, peacefully, in his home on Sherwood Road on Saturday, August 4, 2018. He had just celebrated his 97th birthday.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Allie Doris Crumpler Goodyear and son, Stephen Edward Goodyear. He is survived by his children, Joan Goodyear Smallwood (David), Bernard Joseph Goodyear, III (Janice), Priscilla Goodyear Smith (Jonny), Thomas Franklin Goodyear (Carla); 9 GRANDchildren, Dave, Jennifer, Molly, B.J.IV (Bege), Stephen, Alyssa, Jamison, Jessica and Sarah; and 10 GREAT grandchildren. They also embraced 3 step grandchildren.
Bernard was born in the original Petersburg hospital and remained a lifelong resident of his beloved tri city area.
He attended twelve years at St. Joseph School and was the oldest living alumni. He was a longstanding member of St. Joseph’s Parish, as well as, the Knights of Columbus, in which he, his brother and his father all served as Grand Knights.
Bernard retired from E.I. DuPont after 30 years. He continued to work in landscaping jobs and finished his years of labor in his eighties at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
In his retirement, he enjoyed many years of performing with the singing group, the “Southernaires,” which he thoroughly enjoyed. More recently, he became a member of the Legend of Mary, which, also, brought him so much joy.
Bernie was devoted to his family. He was a hard working yet fun-loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He never lost his zest for life. One of his great joys was to play Santa’s elf for his grandchildren on Christmas day. He was the magic in our lives.
The family will receive friends and family for a visitation at 10am in the Commons on August 10th at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, 151 W Washington St., Petersburg, Va 23803 where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am.
