Betty Lou Munford Hicks

February 10, 1935 — March 9, 2025

Hicks, Betty Lou Munford, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 9, 2025. She was the seventh of eight children of the late Mathew Munford, Sr. and Susie Belle Cones Munford. She was married to the love of her life, Victor Elwood Hicks, for fifty-seven years until his passing in October 2019. In addition to her parents and Victor, Betty Lou was predeceased by her three brothers, Mathew (Mat) Munford, Jr., David (Buck) Munford, and William (Bill) Munford; as well her sisters, Ida Holland, Jean Atkins, and Mary Sue Newcomb. Born in Hopewell, Virginia, her family relocated to Isle of Wight County, where she attended Windsor School, and worked in the peanut fields alongside her siblings. She often spoke of cherished times and humorous events that occurred there. The family moved to Chesterfield County, in 1949. She finished her education and was graduated in the Class of 1953, of Thomas Dale High School. She retired from Zeiss, Inc. (formally Titmus Optical, Inc.) in Petersburg, after 38 years of service, in 1994 as a scheduling supervisor. Betty Lou and Victor were inseparable in most things. They enjoyed growing a bountiful garden each year, working around the house together, and loving their family. Betty Lou is survived by their daughter, Vickie Lynn Hicks Toms (Robert), of Midlothian; two grandsons, Bobby Toms (Rebecca), of Evergreen, CO, and Brandon Toms (Jessy), of Conway, SC; and her new great-grandson, Victor Mathew Toms, of Conway, SC. She is also survived by her loving sister, Lelia Winn (Lewis), of Chester; and her sister-in-law, Eunida Hicks, of Roxboro, NC; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son, located at 103 S. Adams Street, on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held there in the chapel on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, 1311 Birdsong Road, South Prince George, Virginia. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the compassionate care that she received at Spring Arbor Cottages of Salisbury and recently by Crater Community Hospice, of Petersburg, Virginia.
