Betty Carolyn Wardrop, 87, of Petersburg entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Betty was born on April 22, 1922 in Hornell, NY, the eldest of three children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Purcell R. and Dorothy N. Frisbee; sister, Elaine McCarthy and a great granddaughter, Corey E. Lilly. After graduating from the Franklin School of Science and Arts in Philadelphia, she began working at Kate Bitting City Hospital in Winston Salem, NC. In 1942 she joined the U.S. Coast Guard and proudly served her country until she was honorably discharged in 1946. While stationed in Boston, she met and married Lt. Raymond J. Wardrop. She became a devoted Army wife and together they served in numerous assignments stateside and abroad until Col. Wardrop retired at Ft. Lee. A loving wife and mother, she was also a dedicated Red Cross volunteer serving at Fort Lee and helping with adult literacy. She had considerable artistic talent and was an avid reader. Betty was a truly friendly and reliable person who always saw the best in everyone. Betty is survived by her husband of 65 years, Col. Raymond James Wardrop; daughter, Pamela L. Carlson of Cincinnati, OH; son, William J. Wardrop and his wife, Elizabeth of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, Emily R. Wardrop, Sharla C. Lilly, and Christopher R. Carlson and his wife, Pamela; great-grandchildren, Clayton J. Lilly, Camden C. Lilly, Lindsey E. Carlson, and Lauren A. Carlson and a brother, Gerald R. Frisbie and his wife, Babette of Gloversville, NY. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Burial with military honors will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.
