Bonnie Sacra passed from this world into her eternal life on March 9, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born on October 21, 1932, in Fieldale, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Alfred C. Sacra; her father and mother, Ormond and Dolly Hudson; her siblings, Elwin, Peggy, Nancy, Buena, and Jim; granddaughter-in law, Paula; and great-grandson, Mason.
Bonnie met Al when she was his nurse. They married on July 28, 1951, in Fieldale, and Al took her away to the big city. When starting a family, Bonnie put her nursing career on hold and stayed at home to be a devoted mother. After raising their sons, Bonnie earned an Associate's Degree in Nursing and served others as a nurse at several locations including Allied- Signal. Bonnie was a member at First Baptist Church, in Hopewell, for 53 years. She served her Savior and fellow church members in a variety of ways: Bonnie was a Sunday School teacher for 40 years; worked with the church youth groups including as a chaperone and cook for many youth trips to Eagle Eyrie; served as a deacon and on many church committees; and was a member of the "Singing Saints" choir. However, Bonnie's greatest passion at the church was the shut-in ministry. She and Al traveled around visiting and ministering to the church members who were unable to get out to worship.
Bonnie and Al loved to travel, whether it was tent camping, or driving around in their RV. They made multiple cross-country trips, taking in the glory of this nation. They also loved vacationing at Massanutten and especially Myrtle Beach, which was their final adventure together.
Bonnie loved the arts, especially listening to music, singing, and playing the piano. She made sure to pass that love of music to her sons.
Bonnie is survived by her sons, Mark (Renee) and Chad (Barbara); grandchildren, Tommy (Lori), Terri (Bob), Jeremy (Steffany), Jessica (Brian), Matthew, Nathan, Justin, and Shawn (Marion); thirteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her "adopted" family, Trudy, Chuck, and Virginia Dean; as well as many faithful friends and family members who kept her room filled with cards, called to check on her, and visited.
Through the years, there were several care-givers who assisted the family in keeping Bonnie safe and happy. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers from Independent Senior Care, Nayar Hospice, Traditions Hospice, and The Crossings at Ironbridge.
A Celebration of Life will be on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 1:00 PM, at First Baptist Church in Hopewell. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at 12 PM. Interment will be at Bermuda Memorial Gardens, immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to First Baptist Church.
