Byrd Smith Talbert, 79 of Hopewell, died Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Talbert was born in Rockingham, NC and had been a long time resident of the Hopewell area. He served in the U. S. Army during WW II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Talbert was a member of the Hopewell Church of the Brethren and retired from Smurfit Stone Container Corp after 46 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, John E. and Rebecca Meacham Talbert, his wife, Edna Wyant Talbert, and a daughter, Mildred King. Mr. Talbert is survived by two daughters, Alice â??Jeanâ? Lassiter and her husband James, Loraine W. Saunders and her husband Melvin, a son-in-law, George E. King, all of Hopewell, four grandchildren, Ted Saunders and his wife Susie, Steve King and his wife Ann, David Lassiter, Nancy Sinclair and her husband C. B., three great grandchildren, Emily Irby and her husband Kevin, Lori Pitchford and her husband, Mike, and Tracey King, a great, great grandson, Kolby Austin Irby, a sister, Rosie T. Davis of Charlotte, NC, nieces, Debbie, Donna Cottingham and her husband John of Richmond and a cousin, Alice Morton of North Carolina. The family will receive friends, Thursday, January 10, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A funeral service will be held Friday, January 11, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the Hopewell Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Wayne Pennington, pastor officiating.
