Calvin Boyd Ellington, Sr., lovingly known as “Grit”, age 74, of Dinwiddie died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at John Randolph Medical Center. “Grit” loved his family, church and friends. His greatest joys during his last months were spending time with family and friends, fishing, cooking and tending his garden. He served in the U. S. Air Force and retired from Civil Service at Fort Lee after 23 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Mable Wade; father, Alpheous Boyd Ellington; and brother, Edward Ellington all of Dinwiddie. He is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Denise T. Ellington; three daughters, Catherine E. Cheek, Judy E. Barnes and Brandy E. Steele and husband, Matthew; son, Calvin B. Ellington, Jr. and wife, Rhonda; three grandchildren, Lauren Barnes, David Barnes and Tyler Comfort; three sisters, Dora Mitchell, Marion Bryce and husband, William, Vera “Billie” Jones and husband, Linwood; nieces and great nieces; nephews and great nephews; and a special nephew, Ronnie Bryce and wife, Sarah Jo and great nephew, Bill Bryce. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, Petersburg with Pastor Joseph T. Lewis and former Pastor Mark Blair officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
