Carl Robert Howard, died Monday, April 1, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born on November 21, 1929 to the late Carl Reeves and Estelle Holland Howard of Charlotte, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Scott H. Howard and Edgar F. Howard; and a sister, Jane H. Disney. Mr. Howard graduated from Emory and Henry College, where he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame; and he received his master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was a long-time resident of Radford, Virginia, where he coached football at Radford High School. Mr. Howard came to Petersburg in August of 1958 to teach and coach football at Petersburg High School. Formerly, he was president of the Parent Teacher’s Association at Walnut Hill Elementary School, a member of the Board of Director’s at the Country Club of Petersburg, president of the Friday German Club; and a member of the Vestry at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church. Mr. Howard also served for many years as chairman of the Automated Management Department of the Army Logistics Management College at Fort Lee. He is survived by his wife, Nell Roper Howard of Prince George; two sons, Robert Scott Howard of Roanoke and Philip Roper Howard of Richmond; two grandchildren, Philip Roper Howard, Jr. and Sarah McKinley Howard; a niece, Leigh Howard Dover of Jackson, Georgia; and a sister-in-law, Belle McCrary Howard of Forsyth, Georgia. The family extends a special “thank you” to Mr. Howard’s long-term caregivers. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, April 3rd at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church with the Reverend David H. Teschner presiding. Inurnment will follow in Blandford Cemetery.
