Carl Wayne Stewart, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, age 87, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 28, 2025. He was born in Petersburg, Virginia, to the late Reginald Wilkerson and Myrtle Skinner Stewart. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Rolland "Skee Ball" Wilkerson Stewart; and sister, Dorothy Stewart Cates. Carl served in the United States Navy, and the majority of his career was spent in the optical business including Titmus Optical, Hilbert Burdell, and Sola Optical USA. He also dedicated many years as a first responder with the Dinwiddie Rescue Squad. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Constance (Connie) Brown Stewart; two daughters, Carla Stewart Wagstaff (Dean) and Joni Stewart Harrison (Scott); step-son, Robert (RC) Sesterak; grandson, Stewart Ashton Harrison, who was the apple of his eye; nieces, Sharon Stewart Taylor (Keith) and Rhonda Cates Belcher (Mike); nephews, John E. "Jay" Cates, Jr. (Debbie) and Ronald "Ronnie" Stewart; two sisters-in-law, Stephanie (Stevie) Korneke (Dale) and Kathy Brown (Greg); brother in-law, Carl (Tony) Brown (Teresa); and many other beloved family members and friends.
Carl enjoyed his time on the fairways at the Fort Gregg-Adams Golf Course, Prince George Golf Course, Myrtle Beach golf courses, and other various golf courses. Carl enjoyed playing baseball and softball for many years and was an absolute stellar pitcher. He also spent time as a coach for a Women's USSSA Softball Team - Tex's Angels. He enjoyed other hobbies including bowling, dancing (didn't ever have to worry about anyone not having a dance partner), watching boxing, old western shows, and working puzzles. Carl was also very much involved and dedicated to attending activities in his daughters' and grandson's lives. He held dear his activity and association with the Petersburg Old Geezers Organization (POGO) and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Petersburg; and former member of the Hopewell Moose Lodge.
The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff and nurses at Johnston Willis Hospital (3rd and 4th floor) and for the acts of compassion and care given by Legacy Hospice.
A celebration of Carl's life will be held at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son, 103 S.Adams Street, Petersburg, VA 23803, on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 11 a.m. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers contributions in the name of Carl W. Stewart may be made to Legacy Hospice, 1801 Bayberry Court, Suite 201, Richmond, VA 23226.
