Carl Evan Wiseman

December 24, 1927 — July 5, 2019

Carl E. Wiseman, Jr., age 91, was raised to his eternal home on July 6, 2019, following a long battle with dementia and Parkinson’s Disease. He lived in Hopewell, VA, for 50+ years, but recently resided at Beth Sholom, Richmond, VA.He celebrated 67 years of loving marriage with wife Marilyn Todd Wiseman who died Oct. 9, 2013. A devoted father, he is survived by two daughters: Sarah Alling (husband, Mark) of Mechanicsville, VA; and, Janice Diehl (husband, Rev. Fred) of Hamburg, PA. Carl was blessed with 3 grandsons: Jason Diehl (wife, Dana) of Olathe, KS; Daniel Alling of Mechanicsville, VA; and, Brian Alling (wife, Amanda) of West Chesterfield, VA. In addition, he was Grandpa or Chip to his three great-granddaughters: Hannah Diehl, age 17; Evelyn Rose Alling, age 3; and Marilyn Jane Alling, age 1½. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 2 nephews, 1 niece and his parents Carl Wiseman and Minnie Tippie Wiseman.Carl and Marilyn were born in Athens, Ohio, and met during high school; she was a majorette and he played Center for the Athens Bulldogs football team. After high school graduation, he entered the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in China during World War II. After the war, he worked as a guard/counselor for the federal penal system at the Chillicothe Correctional Facility, Chillicothe, OH, and then he was transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution near Hopewell, VA.Carl was a natural athlete and played many different sports. As a teenager, he earned extra money by playing billiards. As an adult, he participated in a Hopewell bowling league, but his passion was golf. Carl golfed several days a week at the Ft. Lee Golf Course, Petersburg, VA., and he also played in many amateur tournaments throughout the East Coast winning trophies and gifts. He and Marilyn were avid square dancers, enjoying the sport for over 40 years, and danced at festivals all over the U.S. Another passion they shared together was travelling all over the world.“Junior”, as he was called by his brothers and sisters, was a card shark and very often won the games of pinochle, canasta, hearts, cribbage or dominoes which he played with his family and continued with his own children. Everyone wanted to beat Carl at whatever game was being played.A private graveside service will be held at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in memory of Carl E.
