Bernard, Mrs. Carol Harriet Byrnes, 90, died Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in Richmond, VA. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Raymond F. and Ruth S. Byrnes. She graduated from Cheltenham High School, attended Beaver College, in Philadelphia, and received her RN from Lakaneau Hospital Nursing School. A long-time Registered Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, working in pediatrics, cardiology, and finally as a Nursing Supervisor, she retired in 1999.
Carol was a devoted member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Richmond. She served as a Stephen Minister and was known for her campaigns to provide food for those in need. She deeply missed her church family in her final years.
Carol's passion was caring for others. She greatly loved all of God's creation, especially animals. She was a long-time volunteer for St. Francis Humane Association, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization committed to finding permanent, responsible and loving homes for animals.
Carol was predeceased by her husband, John J. Bernard, Sr.; her parents, Raymond and Ruth Byrnes; and her brother, John Clark Byrnes. She is survived by her five children, John Bernard (Lynn), Rick Bernard (Marjean), Lisa Kelley (Bob), Suzanne Burke (Brad), and Carolyn Pastore (Christian); many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Ada Byrnes.
Carol's family would like to thank the loving caregivers at Crater Community Hospice, Bristol Hospice, and Yama Home Services.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 7757 Chippenham Parkway, Richmond, VA 23225, on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. Following the service and a reception, interment into the St. Luke Memorial Garden will take place.
