Carol Parham Hawkins, age 94, died October 23, 2008 at The Petersburg Ladies Home, in her hometown of Petersburg, Virginia. She took pride in being the first girl born on Westover Avenue in Petersburg. Her parents were I. Val Parham of Petersburg and Lucille Loyd Parham formerly of Lynchburg.
She was a 1937 graduate of Randolphâ??Macon Womanâ??s College. After her marriage in 1940, she lived with her family in Williamsburg, Virginia, Danville, Virginia, Coldwater, Michigan, Darien, Connecticut, and Atlanta, Georgia. In retirement, she and her husband moved back to Petersburg thirty-one years ago. She was a wonderful mother and devoted friend, who managed to maintain friendships acquired in the many places in which she lived over the years. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, a talented floral arranger, and an active contributor to her book clubs. She loved a good story, and entertained many generations of family and friends with her extraordinary good humor and love of interacting with people.
Preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Edgar Marvin Hawkins, Jr. and her daughter Carol Aston Hawkins. She is survived by two sisters, Lucille Parham Crane of Litchfield, CT and Katherine Parham Price of Jonesboro, AR; and her sons Val Parham Hawkins and his wife Florence Fox Hawkins of Alexandria, Virginia, and Edgar Marvin Hawkins III and his wife Christine Hawkins of Darien, Connecticut. Five grandchildren also survive her: Eleanor Hawkins Maguire and her husband William Patterson Maguire of Washington, D.C.; Val Parham Hawkins, Jr. and his wife Sophie Brown Hawkins of Washington, D.C.; Chance Colbert Hawkins, of San Francisco, California; Andrew Aston Hawkins of Austin, Texas; and Thomas Edgar Hawkins of Alexandria, Virginia. She also leaves four great granddaughters.
Burial service will be at Blandford Cemetery on Friday, October 31 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at The Petersburg Ladies Home at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fellowship Fund of the Petersburg Ladies Home, 311 South Jefferson Street, Petersburg, Virginia 23805.
