Carolyn Edmiston Swift, 67, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2012 during the noon hour. She was the wife of retired Hopewell letter carrier, Robert N. Swift, Jr., for the past forty-five years and nine months. She was the only child of Fred Odell Edmiston and Ethel Mary Miller Edmiston, both deceased.
Carolyn went to Woodlawn Elementary School and Hopewell High School where she graduated in 1964. Her work career started as a baker at the former Petersburg General Hospital. She worked thirteen months in food service at Georgeâ??s Drug Store II, before her marriage on June 11, 1966, at the Hopewell Church of the Brethren. The original minister of the Hopewell Church of the Brethren was her grandfather, Reverend Miller. She later enjoyed bowling, and worked as a clerk at the Walnut Hill Lanes in Petersburg for ten years. In 1992 she worked two years for the Greater Petersburg Area Agency on Aging, handling food delivered by other drivers like her husband to needy people. Her last ten year career was at Hopewell Pizza Hut at Cavalier Square and later at the current location in the Crossings. Carolyn was a charter member of Liberty Baptist Church in 1976. She enjoyed teaching childrenâ??s church. She also helped raise three housecats and one outdoor cat, named Snooks, Golda, Precious, and Brown Sugar.
She had been handicapped since early October 2004. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012 at Liberty Baptist Church, 3807 Woodlawn Street, Hopewell, VA 23860. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012 in Blandford Cemetery, followed by a time of food and fellowship at the church.
