Catherine Piecek Mach, 83 of Sutherland, passed into eternal life on Friday, December 3, 2004, at Southside Regional Medical Center with her children and sister at her side. Born in Hopewell the daughter of the late Mary Josephine Seidel and Joseph Piecek, Catherine grew up in Richmond and attended St. Joseph Villa and graduated from St. Patrick High School. She then returned to Petersburg and in April 1943 was married to Stanley A. Mach, beginning her loving and devoted career as a wife and mother. Once her children were all in school, Catherine gradually began a working career in the office at the old Petersburg Stock Yards. After several years, she went into Civil Service working in Admissions at Kenner Army Hospital from where she retired. She also worked in the Admissions Office at Petersburg General Hospital. During these years, Catherine continued her active participation in St. Joseph’s School, where she served in many capacities, and in church life where she continued as a faithful steward. Catherine is survived by three daughters Bernadette Rouse and husband Thomas of Alpharetta, GA, Andrea Slatinsky and husband Dave of Eads, TN, Angela Connelly of Sutherland; one son Stanley F. Mach and his wife Susan of Concord, NC. She also leaves a sister Elizabeth Piecek of Sutherland, brother Leo Piecek of Flushing, MI, and a sister-in-law Elizabeth M. Vesely of Petersburg. Her legacy continues with her seven grandchildren; Rene Christine R. Kummer, Anthony B. Rouse, Amy S. Norsworthy, Timothy B. Mach, David M. Slatinsky, Jennifer M. Lazarus, and Alison M. Scalvini. Catherine is great-grandmother to Phoebe, Ashley, Alexandra and Jared Mach, Michael Slatinsky, and Megan Norsworthy. She also leaves eight nieces and three nephews. Catherine is preceded in death by her husband Stanley A. Mach, son Brian Thomas Mach, and brothers Joseph and Charles Piecek. A Christian Wake Service will be held Monday, December 6, at 7 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 7, at 11 a.m. Interment will be at St. John Nepomucene Cemetery with a reception to follow at St. John’s Parish Hall.
