Charles Chandler Ashby, Sr., 90, went to be with his Lord on February 23, 2022. He lived his life with an unwavering faith in God and served his Lord, his family, his community and his country well. All that he did in life was fueled by love and a servant's heart.
Charles, also fondly known as Daddy, Pop and Doc, was born December 11, 1931 in Southampton County to the late Edward Basset Ashby, Sr. and Wilmer Sizer Ashby. Charles attended Hampden Sydney College, MCV School of Medicine and interned at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Ohio. Along with his parents, Dr. Ashby was preceded in death by Martha Tomlinson Ashby, his devoted wife of 64 years; his brothers, Frederick B. Ashby, Sr., Bailey S. Ashby and Edward B. Ashby, Jr.; and his granddaughter, Megan Leigh Crumpler.
Charles is survived by his children, Charles, Jr. (Julia) Ashby, Luelle (Jay) Crumpler, Bobbie Murray, and Lynn (David) Estep; his grandchildren, Allison (Kevin) Laskowski, Matthew Ashby, Erin (Brian) Amrich, Jessica (Riley) Ewen, Claire (Jeremey) Goolsby, Charlie Murray, Matt (Erin) Estep, and Alex (Amanda) Estep; his great-grandchildren, Theodore, Ezekiel and Gabriel Laskowski, Emerson and Findlay Amrich, and Francis, Martha and Max Ewen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
As a true country doctor practicing in Dinwiddie County for more than 42 years, a long-time member of Smyrna Baptist Church (Dinwiddie) and Ironbridge Baptist Church (Chesterfield) and a nine-year resident of the Springdale retirement community in Chesterfield, he has been blessed with a multitude of loving and caring friends who have supported and encouraged him through his battle with cancer. The family extends our gratitude to all of you. Your friendships, calls, cards, and visits have meant more than you know. To Nicole Viers and Kimberly Stokes, his kind, loving, professional and reliable caregivers for the past nine months, we could not have done it without you. You have walked this walk with us just like family, and we love you. James River Hospice was brought in just a few weeks ago, but their loving guidance and support has meant more than we could have imagined.
A service will be held on Monday, February 28, 11:00 a.m. at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Petersburg, VA, with burial to follow at the Waverly Cemetery, Waverly, VA. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday, February 27, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
