Charles McDonald Mabon, Jr. 73, of Petersburg, son of the late Charles M. Mabon, Sr. and Elsie Newman Mabon, passed away Monday, March 8, 2004 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sue McElfresh Mabon; daughters, Lori O’Kennon and friend, Milton Alexander, Kari Daniel and husband, John, Pegi Marshall and friend, Ronald Turner, and Pati Ferguson and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Katie O’Kennon, Summer and John Daniel, Jesse and Emily Marshall, Megan and Brandon Ferguson; brother, Jon Mabon; sisters, Barbara Ritcheson and Carla Manieri; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Mabon was born in Petersburg, graduated from Petersburg High School and was a 1952 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. In 1957 he established Charlie’s Drive In and Pizza House in Petersburg which he operated until his death. Mr. Mabon was a 50 year member of Petersburg Lodge # 15 A.F. & A. M. and the ACCA Temple Shrine. He was also a member of Monroe Lodge #8 International Order of Oddfellows and Rebeccas and had served as Grand Treasurer of Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association, was Past President and board member of the Virginia Restaurant Association, and was vice-chairman of the Electoral Board of Petersburg. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 12, at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, led by Rev. C. C. Kurtz and the International Order of Oddfellows. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
