Charles Wilbur Maitland, 91, of Dinwiddie, passed away on June 14, 2014. Born March 3, 1923 in Petersburg, VA he was the son of the late M. Guy and Mary Ann Thomason Maitland; and was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Temple Maitland; and a sister, Doris M. Foederer. Mr. Maitland was a United States Army – Air Force veteran having served in Japan during WWII. He worked for his father who in the 1930’s had started the Maitland Brothers Bus Lines. Mr. Maitland was also an excavating contractor and then was a commercial truck driver and quit driving at the age of 72. He enjoyed eating breakfast and visiting with friends on Saturday mornings at the Yankee Coffee Shop in Petersburg. He is survived by his daughters, Anita Maitland-Mahoney(Pat) and Lisa Maitland Madren(David); grandsons, Evan, Logan, Jacob and Daniel; sisters, Gladys M. Richardson and Pearl M. Brooks; special friends, Renu McMahon and Pam Coats; his faithful dog, Mikki; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. A Celebration of life service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral home with the Rev. Jonathan Dundalow, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your local SPCA.
