Our Charles Edward Whigham, journeyed from this world with a detour in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, before he landed in heaven, on June 3, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and faithful dogs.
An adventure-seeker, rebel, and brilliant polymath, he joined the Air Corps and served during the Korean War. He then studied Political Science and History at his beloved University of Alabama before joining the civil service as a computer specialist and traveling the world, his favorite stops being Hawaii and Germany.
He married the love of his life and intellectual sparring partner, Jacky, in 1976 and adopted her son, Marty, for his own. Their redheaded daughter, Jennifer, was born in 1981 and was the light of Chas's life.
After returning from Germany in 1993, he retired from civil service and worked odd jobs for a while - spending 10 years at White Oak building microchips, running the home improvement section at Lowe's, and even a stint at a car parts store.
In his later years, he loved watching C-SPAN, yelling at Trump (as a lifelong progressive), cuddling with his dogs, having nightly dinner with his wife, reading the paper, and chatting with his friends and family.
Chas loved animals, Bama football, politics, The Lord of the Rings (every year he celebrated Bilbo and Frodo's birthday), cooking shows, Jesus Christ, and good food. He was a steady family man and was funny beyond his time. He was a genius with a photographic memory. He was soft and strong and protective and tender. He was a singular man. What a hole in the world.
He is predeceased by his parents, Herman and Carrie; his sister, Linda Kay; brother, Ralph; son, Marty; and many precious pup companions. He is survived by his wife, Jacky; his daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Chris; his sister, Jaunita; lifelong friends, Tom Booth and Tony Cooper; dogs, Benjamin, Brodie, and Bernie; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Special love to his church, Gravel Run Baptist.
Instead of flowers, he wanted you to donate to his favorite animal shelter, Petersburg Animal Shelter:
